Supporting 18 dance artists and collectives to explore and develop new performance ideas.
At The Place, our unique positioning within the dance industry allows us to offer artists at every stage of their career the chance to experiment and stimulate innovation. Through the Choreodrome programme, choreographers are encouraged to explore new artistic territory via two strands: Research Residencies where artists are commissioned to explore new creative ideas with no pressure to have a finished product at the end, and the Research Workshop where artists can work with a ground-breaking facilitator to further their artistic skills.
Running from 22 July – 22 September 2019, Choreodrome is part of The Place’s range of development opportunities designed to nurture talent and facilitate the growth of independent artists’ creativity and businesses, from graduation and throughout their careers.
For the first time this year, Choreodrome also includes a new Startin’ Point Research Residency Commission, jumping off the success of the Startin’ Point Festival created and curated by Hakeem “Mr Impact” Onibudo in 2018. The Startin’ Point Research Residency Commission supports artists who identify their work as rooted in dances of the African Diaspora.
Wellcome Collection are also partnering on the scheme, offering research residencies to selected Choreodrome artists in their unique Reading Room. Wellcome Collection is a museum and library connecting science, medicine, life and art. Here, the artists will have a chance to engage with the visiting public and the contents of the Reading Room’s collection as they explore their choreographic ideas.
Through an International Exchange Programme in partnership with ARKO, Arts Council Korea, Choreodrome will be offering one residency to a Korean artist. ARKO supports artists participating in overseas artist-in-residence programs with the hope of developing artists and expanding the international network of Korean arts.
The artists who are part of this year’s Choreodrome Research Residencies are Anders Duckworth, Elinor Lewis, ERRATICA, Eva Recacha, Eve Stainton, Janina Rajakangas and Neil Callaghan, Mickael Marso Riviere, Robert Clark, Ruby Portus, Subathra Subramaniam, The Yonis, Thick & Tight.
Startin’ Point Commission Research Residency artists are Jamaal Burkmar, Kloé Dean, Tyrone Isaac-Stuart and Kate Scanlan.
Cathy Waller, Elinor Lewis, Mickael Marso Riviere, Rob Clark, Subathra Subramaniam and Thick & Tight take up a Reading Room Residency at the Wellcome Collection.
